In 2010 I stumbled onto this guy, Everett Bogue’s blog called Far Beyond The Stars. Every week he wrote an article around the concept of Minimalism, his topics and writing really resonated with me. He’s work evolved overtime and eventually he stopped the blog. However fortunately another avid reader archived his work and you can still read the blog that inspired me 10 years ago.

It was through Ev’s blog that I came to learn of Chris Guillebeau and The World Domination Summit – a brilliant conference held in Portland Oregon in the USA that I got to attend twice, 2015 and 2016. More on WDS another time.
Ev handed over the reins to https://www.theminimalists.com/ who continue to speak to the Minimalist movement today.
At the time of discovering his blog, I was working full time, had only purchased our house in the two years prior and were living out the ‘typical’ successful life checklist after having only recently been married. Ev’s blog was a great ‘wake up’ call. As it firstly pulled me up on my consumerist ways and its impact not only on our lifestyle but the environment. Second he spoke to the known desire in me to work for myself and not be caught in the corporate rate race which at the time I had already been deep in for over five years.
Not everything Ev wrote I agree to, however much did and I am very grateful to this day what it sparked in me. I to this day, despite the big house, live what I call a minimalist living. People often query how we live the way we do and I owe much of that to really questioning deeply, what do I really need. Often purchases prior to the Minimalist lifestyle discovery were unnecessary and in the short term consumerist life-cycle – exactly that, short term.
All up I’ve discovered life with less is easier, simpler & cheaper (meaning I can spend it on things more meaningful and impactful long term). I also don’t feel like I’m missing out or that I’m hard done by from my minimalist lifestyle choices. It actually feels the opposite, I feel richer and more fulfilled as a result.
